The impossible. Get a USB drive and ghost a good working copy of your OS drive with the apps you really need. Then when you kill by installing apps you shouldn't/don't really need do a re-fresh. Only takes about 1-3 hours for a 60-100gb drive.

Have you tried ghosting a new image? You can ghost an image across the wire to a server or another machine that has enough disk space to contain the image. The ghostcast software only has to be running when you are ghosting the original image and then anytime you want to re-image your machine.

This method saves a lot of time and a typical XP installation takes only about 15 minutes.

Use you primary HD for your OS and known programs. Install all other programs on the usb HD, and also have a ghost copy of your OS on it....That way you try to keep your primary HD clean...
