I've been thinking of trying out one of the PC compatible Mac OS downloads I've seen around (Leopard v10.5.1 for the AMD). What sort of system spec is required in general?
Can I run it on a six yr old laptop? Mitac7321 M/board Athlon 1600XP cpu 640MB ram (32mb of which goes to an old S3 graphics chip) Or are those spec's too lowly & the whole download would just be a waste of time and bandwidth? Are there any driver issues that commonly occur with running Mac systems on a PC/laptop?

Why can't I download? - "leeching forbidden you are only allowed to seed" If you have downloaded over 2GB and your ratio has dropped below 0.50 you will not be able to download. Solutions 1) Leave a completed torrent in your client until you have uploaded enough data to bring your ratio up to 0.75 2) Upload a torrent of your own and seed until your ratio is 0.75 or higher. 3) Donate to the site and gain Premium membership Please let me know if my torrent or links are dead

I tried doing that on my laptop (different specs) and besides it taking a pretty long time to install and jump through all the hoops, it had problems on the first boot up. Went into verbose mode and it was complaining about something or there was an error of some sort.
After many failed attempts with different kernels and releases, I gave up out of frustration, then eventually on a whim, I said f-it and bought a macbook. Now I can run it in it's native environment or xp or linux or all three (and at the same time if I want (with vmware fusion)). You might get lucky and get a release that actually works, if not, welcome to the pain in the ass!

Thanks for the info guys. I've nearly completed downloading an AMD compatible version of Leopard, if that doesn't work I'll try Leo4All.
At that point if problems like those noanon described persist I'll do like noanon and say f-it.... but I'll skip the buying a macbook bit ![]() I appreciate the help ![]()

Well fyn, it is worth a shot...
The things that Non and others have run into, are just the things you might run into running linux or anything else for that matter on hardware that it doesn't have driver support for it already built in. If you run into these kinds of issues, start the OS in verbose mode. It should give you an indication of where the problem resides. The use you favorite search tool to research a patch for the driver in question, assuming that it is a driver issue, which it will be most likely. Good Luck! Rob!Mac Lets face it, its not really a problem with the OS itself, but that folks want to install it on hardware other than what Apple intended. Not a bad thing, I would love to do it myself, but you just have to expect that it won't operate as intended without a glitch or two...

I recently decided to convert my XP machine in to OS X and to give a fair and balanced overview here goes.
The biggest problems you will run in to is first trying to burn a downloaded ISO file to disk. Try using Ultra ISO on a windows machine. The next problems will be determining which options to install with. A lot the the files are patched to work on intel and finding the right combination can be a case of knowing a bit about the hardware in your pc. You can go with a basic install as a good starting point. The next hurdle will be finding drivers for some of you hardware. A lot of pc hardware isn't natively supported on OS X. But once again due to the development projects going on a lot of the more common brands of hardware have had drivers written for them or work arounds that will get them functioning . I was relatively lucky as all but my sound and graphics worked pretty well. Now I found drivers and patches and everything works well. But do expect do maybe have to spend some a bit of time getting to know it. Decide which version of OS x you want to install. You may find earlier releases have better support (i.e. installing tiger 10.4.3 or 10.4.10/11 rather than leopard) In terms of performance and glitches, I am now running leopard 10.5.2 without any problems. I'm running a single core Pentium 3.4Mhz with 2Gb ram, Nvidia 6800GS (nothing special), onboard audio. In a real world test in terms of launching applications and general performance it has outperformed the majority of G5 machines I tested on. The conclusion I would say it is worth it and you could save yourself the cost of a new mac but be prepared you might have to do some digging for information to get it work. I had the most success with Leo4all and got nowhere with Kalyway. From reading the forums and from my own experience I would say for compatibility to go with Leo4all. Don't be shy to post on the forums for help. Good luck Last edited by whatsthepoint : 04-23-2008 at 11:25 AM.
