Default Nooooob questions!

Hey all,

I just joined this place a couple days ago, and have been searching for answers since. While I found some solutions, I realized that I have so many questions, I better find the questions first!

So I'm putting down a few basic questions that I'm sure have been asked and answered already; I just couldn't find them in my limited capacity.

Just a little bit about myself: I use a pc with Azureus on it but am equally (un)familiar with uTorrent also. I download mainly movies and tv shows for use on my Apple TV and software for business usage. I'm an audiophile that LOVES all sorts of music and a Home Theater freak. The fact that my wife wants to dump all my equipment outside on our main road where big trucks run by all the time is testament to this fact!

Feel free to redirect me if that's easier:

So here goes:

1) I wanna upload some dvds and music: What is a good tool to use to do that?

2) I have a small 2 MB dsl connection which gives me a max of a 130-odd Kbps downloads, but a max of 45-50 for the uploads. Can the minimum ratio required on this site still be met?

3) I downloaded National Treasure 2 yesterday (in fact, it's still seeding) but there is no uploading going on there. Why? Is it because no one is downloading it? If that is the case, then does that mean that I won't get any credit for seeding.

4) I'm seeding a ton of stuff that I got from other sites (before I saw the light and ended up here!)... Does that count towards my uploading ratio? If not, is there any way to get it to count?

5) What the heck is DHT? I saw in a few of the posts that the questions were answered by disabling DHT. How do I do that in Azureus and what is it?

I think that's it for now... I'll continue looking for answers.. But any help to push along this well intentioned newbie is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Fauzi

1) uTorrent & Azureus are the main tools used by people here to make torrents. Either one will do fine. There are many guides in the support section to help walk you through the process. Plus theres a handy testing area for you to try out your first torrents

2) Evveryone has that problem But it's still possible to keep a good ratio

3) You are correct. It just means you were unforunate enough to download the torrent at a time when few others are downloading it. You won't be able to upload anything until someone starts downloading from you.

I'm afraid you don't get any upload credit. There was talk of a system where you would have been given some upload credit just for seeding, even if no one downloaded. But the site is only a few months old and no such system has been introduced yet.

4) This is a private tracker & so only torrents from this site count towards your ratio. This also includes any torrents you upload to the site, they count towards your ratio too. I have downloaded torrents from other sites/sources and then uploaded them here... that counts

5) DHT is a form of decentralized tracking which could allow none members to download from the site... perhaps without bothering to seed back to others. This is not well liked because this is a private tracker wth a ratio system designed to promote sharing within this community.

Why can't I download? - "leeching forbidden you are only allowed to seed"

If you have downloaded over 2GB and your ratio has dropped below 0.50 you will not be able to download.

Solutions

1) Leave a completed torrent in your client until you have uploaded enough data to bring your ratio up to 0.75
2) Upload a torrent of your own and seed until your ratio is 0.75 or higher.
3) Donate to the site and gain Premium membership

the last time i used Azureus this is how i disabled DHT in Azureus

>Tools >Options >Connection >under "Peer Sources - Select the default permitted sources for peer connections" only check "From a tracker"
>Tools >Options >Plugins >Distributed DB >uncheck "Enable the distributed database"
>Tools >Options >Plugins >Distributed Tracker >uncheck "Only track normal torrents when their tracker is unavailable"
>Tools >Options >Sharing >check "Private torrent - only accept torrents from the tracker (This should automatically grey out and disable "Allow decentralized tracker when tracker is unavailable")
>Save >restart Azureus

You should see a red dot and "Disabled" on the bottom of the main Azureus window.

Ok... another tough (?!?!) one...

I live in Pakistan, and here we have MAJOR power issues - To the extent that I have a UPS installed on all our machines, but the voltage issues are so bad here that even they don't charge fully sometimes. In short, I will have issues sometimes where I post a torrent, and am not able to give 48 hours of CONTINUOUS uploading. Once I'm at work, and the power goes, there's nothing I can do about it till I come home.

Is that a bad thing for my status?

It's a bit of a bad thing. But no one can help occasional accidents like that (yesterday I fubar'd my laptop a bit & am in the process reinstalling my OS).

Just try your best and it will be enough

If you can, try to back-up your torrents so that they don't become corrupted or lost due to a power outage.

PS. Something that's worth doing is partitioning your HDD. Then putting your OS on one smaller System partition and everything else on the rest of the HDD. That allows you to make quite small back-ups of your OS.

I think Acronis Trueimage can take a 16GB System partition that has 5GB's worth of operating system on it and compress it down to a disc image of about 1.6GB's. Makes re-installing your system so much easier if a power outage messes with it, you get to keep all your main programs and settings intact from the last back-up you made.

Also it may be an Idea to mention it in the post when you make a torrent that due to circumstances beyond your control there may be times when you cannot seed but you will resume seeding as soon as possible (just to let people know that may not have seen this post).
