Default FTP help

im setting up an ftp drive at the minute, all is going swimmingly.... sort of!!

i can access the drive myself with smartftp etc no proble witht the internal ip from my hub, what i dont know is how do i find out the EXTERNAL ip so that myself and others can access it from outside my home network. i DID have this solved yesterday but unfortunately hadn't set the ip to static so its no longer valid and i aint got a damn clue how i found it.

BTW its and external NAS drive so the likes of whatsmyip.com aint any use.

If theres any networking/ftp gurus here, please here my cry's

If your on windows Start> Run > cmd

then type ipconfig /all

that might do the trick

lets put it like this if i was getting paid for google searches just for today i'd have enough money to get a team of engineers round to do it for me and give me a footrub too lol. had a few near calls but everythin just keeps pointing to sites that give you the ip of the system your visiting on, not the externals connected to it. there HA to be a way or how would ppl use FTP!!!

Blu,

I assume that you know the internal TCP/IP address of the NAS (FTP) box, right? If so, go into your firewall and forward ports 20 & 21 to the IP address of your NAS. To find out your current external address, go to http://www.whatsmyipaddress.com/ from inside your home network.

Now, that having been said, I am gonna bet that your external address is dynamic. Depending on the router model and firmware reveision, you might be able to auto-magically update a dynamic service like DYnDNS.com when the address changes. Other than that, they do have client side apps that can do this for you as well that run in the task tray or as a windows service.

I hope that this helps you.

thanks for the info Rob, but isn't the external address that site gives me the one for my pc or is that for the network as a whole?baiscally the ftp drive is a seperate standalone unit that will be running when my rig is off so having appz etc run in the background is a no-go.looks like a dynamic dns service is my only choice, im just a bit weary after reading the terms on some of them, considering the content that i have on the drive, eg screeners and albums etc that i shouldnt be sharing lol

Blu-

The external address is that of your router, not your PC. DynDNS has nothing to do with what you are serving yourself. It is simply a way to have a friendly name (something you can remember) for your external address. Also, unless your IP address changes frequently, you can shut down your PC. If the address changes, worst case scenario, the DynDNS will not be updated until you get back home and turn on your PC. What kind of router do you have? I might be able to find out if it can do the updates instead of your PC.

If you want to test the setup to make sure it is working correctly, PM me your IP and I'll see what response I get from your NAS. I will not attempt to hack or break into your NAS, that I can promise you.

not worried bout you doing anythin like that but you were right, i ftp'd the external ip and got the password screen so all is good, i am on a dynamic ip though, i know i can set up a static but its awkward.

Im using a crappy bt homehubm not sure what firmware etc, if it can update the stuff itself that be great but if not, no problem, is kinda good knowing no1 will ever have access for more than 24 hours, but not so good if i go away from home lol

right after a few days of running trial and error i can have it running and access outside my network is not a problem, the only problem is my dynamic IP changing every 24 hours. not a huge issue for me accept for when i go away. so mr robi if you can tell me how i can assign a static ip on my hub if and when i need to for a week so.

hmmm not allowing external access again.just had a flick thru settings and i made a boo-boo, had subnet set to 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 would this stop ppl accessing it externally but still allow me on it from home network?

girlfriends brother managed to get the point where it asks for username and password but the it logs him in with no folders to access which is not how its setup in settings page.

if i knew it'd be this much of a pain i dont think i'd have bothered but since i started i wanna finish it, and besides im learning at the same time

Blu-

I am glad to help you out. There are several things that might be issues and I have listed them below. Each will cause issues themselves, which when combined, make it difficult to troubleshoot.
  1. Does the NAS have a static TCP/IP address on your network?
  2. Does your home network have static TCP/IP addressing, or do you rely upon the DHCP? If DHCP, is the TCP/IP address of the NAS marked as reserved in the DHCP scope?
  3. Were tyou able to find out if your router was capable of doing a Dynamic DNS update? If not, perhaps there might be some other facility that we might be able to use instead.
  4. Is your router configured to forward both ports 20 and 21? When Fyn was testing this for you, did he happen to mention if his client was in passive(PASV) or active mode? Most FTP client software defaults to pasive mode these days, which might make it appear that the directory is empty, when what is actually occuring is that the request was made, but th client is in passive mode, which has to timeout (length of time varies with the client software used) and then attempts active mode. The method for changing the client into active mode is beyond the scope of this tiny posting, but if using the commandline version of FTP, you can try either "pass" - or - "PASV"...some clients are case sensitive and you might have to try both upper and lower case...as always, YMMV and battiers not included.
