just signed up this am. 1st download got to 12% then stopped. info on transmissions say: private torrent, pex automatically disabled. what does this mean and now what?

Try loading the torrent again. And it's possible your port is not open. To check go to Transmission > Preferences > Network. If your port is not open use Transmission's Help Menu: Help > Transmission Help > Port Forwarding FAQ. Also you may find the Mac Tutorials useful:
