Default file server / misc computer Help

I am wanting to know if there is a way to use an additional computer to be used as the host for utorrent only. I want to keep my main computers from running all the time using their power hungry componets, where I want to have it just up and down files without having to run a heavy video load. Does anyone have any thought that may help?
Thank You!

yes definitely you can.
and it does not have to be the latest computer either.
you can get by with a model thats been around for a while.
I've got a file server which is a pentium 722mhz with 64 mb ram (with onboard graphics) running Xubuntu(linux) with utorrent running on wine on it without any issues.
if you want to run windows xp you might need a bit more ram although seein as you want to run it just for utorrent you can disable a lot of the unnecessary services which run in the background saving you on ram. you could use windows 2000 as well as it runs utorrent without any issues.

if you need any help in setting up or any more queries just ask and I'll try to help if I can.

Hello again
I have an old pc with an amd 1800 or so 266 of ram, hard drive is only about 20gb but I am trying to find a large non-sata to use. I have used Ubuntu in the past so I have no problem going that route, but I would like to know how you get the data to and from that pc? Do you have to go to it and transfer using a disk or flash drive? The reason I ask is my main pc is an XP system and I did not have any luck in the past trying to network them.

in the beginning I used to transfer using a flash disc in the past
but I've setup networking using samba on xubuntu and it works pretty good.
there is a good howto on the ubuntu forums search for "Setup Samba peer to peer with windows from Stormbringer" on the ubuntuforums.
yep your pc should work fine with ubuntu...it should work fine with xp as well if you don't want the hassle of setting up linux which can be a bit lengthy.

Thank You! That pulled everything together that I have been researching.
I was reading on Samba but was unsure of all uses. Once you have the second pc running is there a need use it directly or can I use the network to add to utorrent and start seeds.

you can use the network to add torrents to utorrent by using the webui feature which is in beta but works pretty gr8.
to make a torrent you have two options-
1) to do it physically at the linux box
2) setup a vnc server on your ubuntu box and access you ubuntu installation from windows. you'll be able to control your ubuntu box like it was in front of you.
theres a good guide on setting up vnc-server for hardy heron here
Code:
http://maketecheasier.com/set-up-a-vnc-server-in-ubuntu-hardy-heron/2008/05/30
after you set it up on your linux box you need to install a vnc client like tightvnc on your windows installation so that you can remote into your ubuntu box.
hope that makes sense

Why can't I download? - "leeching forbidden you are only allowed to seed"

If you have downloaded over 2GB and your ratio has dropped below 0.50 you will not be able to download.

Solutions

1) Leave a completed torrent in your client until you have uploaded enough data to bring your ratio up to 0.75
2) Upload a torrent of your own and seed until your ratio is 0.75 or higher.
3) Donate to the site and gain Premium membership
