Default Sex change bloke set to be a mum

A BLOKE with a beard sent shockwaves round the world yesterday when he announced: “I’m PREGNANT.”

Thomas Beatie, 34, released this astonishing photo showing his swollen belly — and said it felt “incredible” to be a pregnant man.

He revealed he is due to give birth on July 3.

And he told how he was fertilised using donor sperm because his WIFE Nancy cannot have children.

American Thomas — a transsexual who was actually born female — admitted that his amazing pregnancy would create “legal, political and social unknowns”.

But in a real-life echo of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1994 film Junior, Thomas vowed to carry on living as a man even while his baby bump is growing.

He added: “I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.”

Thomas is legally a man after undergoing a sex change, even though he kept his female reproductive organs.

He and his wife were desperate to start a family after ten years together, but Nancy, 45, had had a hysterectomy after health problems 20 years ago.

Confident

So Thomas, who had chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy for his sex change, stopped the hormone injections and his periods returned.

A year later he fell pregnant with twins using donor sperm, but lost the babies after developing life-threatening complications.

He then became pregnant again five months ago, and his doctors now expect him to give birth to a healthy baby girl.

Thomas bravely decided to write about his experience in respected US gay magazine The Advocate.

He wrote: “How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible.

“Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.

“To those in the quiet community where we live, we are viewed just as we are — a happy couple deeply in love.

“Our desire to work hard, buy our first home, and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary.

“That is, until we decided that I would carry our child. I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy.”

Thomas admitted medics, friends and relatives had been shocked by his pregnancy. One doctor ordered him to shave off his beard before referring him to a psychologist.

And Thomas revealed his wife’s family are in for a shock because they have no idea he was born female.

He said: “Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs.

“Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.

“The first doctor we approached was a reproductive endocrinologist. He was shocked by our situation and told me to shave my facial hair.

“A few months and $2,000 later, he told us he would no longer treat us, saying he and his staff felt uncomfortable working with ‘someone like me’.”

Thomas said even his own family had failed to support him after he lost the twins.

He revealed: “When my brother found out he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been’.”

Thomas went on: “I am so lucky to have such a loving, supportive wife.

Before undergoing his sex change, Thomas was a lesbian called Tracy LaGondino.

Tracy was a prominent gay rights activist in Hawaii, campaigning to stop hate crimes and to give same-sex couples the right to adopt.

Friends told how blonde Tracy fell in love with Nancy Roberts. Nancy moved in with Tracy — but pretended to be a lodger to avoid discrimination.

Tracy then had a sex change because Hawaiian law barred same-sex marriages. Two years ago the couple moved to Bend, Oregon — a former logging town of 80,000 residents — where they run a screen-printing business called Define Normal.

Stunned neighbours last night refused to believe Thomas could be pregnant.

But the editor of the Los Angeles-based Advocate said: “We called Thomas’s doctor. She confirmed Thomas is pregnant and the pregnancy is proceeding.”

Oregon Man Says He's Five Months Pregnant Transgender Man Expecting A Baby Last Edited: Wednesday, 26 Mar 2008, 9:39 AM CDT Created: Tuesday, 25 Mar 2008, 7:41 PM CDT An Oregon transgender male who legally changed his sex from female to male says he is pregnant with a baby girl. (MyFoxCleveland)
From MyFoxNY Reports

A transgender man with female reproductive organs says he's pregnant.
Thomas Beatie from Bend, Oregon and his wife, Nancy, are expecting in July.
Beatie wrote an article for a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender magazine where he describes how he became pregnant, his hopes for a family nearly realized and the negative reaction from family, friends, doctors and the general public.
Beatie tells the Advocate that his wife could not conceive so they decided he would. Beatie stopped taking male hormones and began menstruating again. He says he was artificially inseminated and then became pregnant.
On Wednesday morning Beatie's article on the Advocate magazine web site was unaccessible.

Kind of misleading that "person." It's not like me having a kid or something. Weird, but "people" born with female reproductive organs are perfectly capable of having children, I have always thought that anyways. That Oregonian doesn't exactly look like a man anyhow, just a freaky weirdo! I'd like to hear about a real breakthrough though, not this crap. They really shouldn't be assisting people like this to breed. Just my opinion. Imagine the life of that science experiment......er.... I mean kid.

It would have been different if "he", and I use that term loosely, had been born a male. People would still be shocked at the prospect, but the miracles of modern science would be hailed over all. I think the operation of our biology is just fine the way that it is.

Don't be so slosed minded people. You all are happy with who you are and what you got. Some people aren't and do what is necessary to change it. We wouldn't even be commenting on this if it was the wife who was carrying the child, it wouldn't be news cause they are a trans gender couple. But instead the husband who is obviously capable of carrying their children is doing it. Hell he is doing something that most women probably think about all the time..."why the hell can't he get the morning sickness, constipation and stretch marks". Just because something isn't your way doesn't mean that it isn't okay...they want kids and found a way to do it. Just my 2 cents.

Except for the fact that "he" is still technically a "she" or she couldn't, therefore it is not newsworthy. Nothing odd occurred. A "he" (donor) impregnated a "she", just as nature intended (almost). Doesn't matter what you do to yourself through hormones or surgeries, that is the nature of our creation. Closed minded or whatever you misinterperet it as has no bearing on genetics and science. You can't put unleaded fuel in a diesel, just how it's designed, change it and it's not a diesel. You can't hydrate with Hydrochloric acid instead of water, doesn't work, remove the chlorine you no longer have HCL. I'd love to carry children, just can't. This is simply an example of people playing with nature's design and it's unnecessary. None of these advances are engrained into our DNA therefore cannot be genetically passed through the generations. They are short term solutions to problems that exist far beyond the realm of "I wish I could have kids." Lots of people want things, if everybody had what they wanted we would call this planet Utopia and not Earth. Thank heavens we are dedicating medical research to fixing these problems instead of the diseases and truly inhereint genetic disorders that wipe out populations of humans every year. Money well spent so that a child can grow up and be what? Well, none of us know, because these instances are so rare (and hopefully stay that way) that there exists no material to compare. I suppose it's no different than many other things, I personally don't care what they do as it has no affect or effect on me, I just find it to be below the depths of anything I would consider newsworthy. Radio been on about it all day and night, CNN etc. Who cares as I reiterate: A Male and a Female made a child. Nothing odd. The "Female" anatomically will carry the child. Since when did male and female become anything besides a breeding distinction anyways?

It's incredibly stupid for a sex-change guy to have a kid.

They have to have all sorts of hormone treatments (ie, as in he's got a beard now) and so the child could be adversely effected during pregnancy... perhaps even if he stopped taking the hormone treatments prior to conceiving.

I would like to know how one completes a sex change operation and still has the reproductive organs to carry this off? I can only assume that they removed the vaginal area and crafted a male organ, or at least some semblance of one. Ho then did thy not remove the uterus and ovaries? Is this something less than a complete change? If so, then this woman really wants to be a woman and enjoy the benefits of that fact. She did what she had to do to get around the law in her state, but isn't it likely that the state can now go after her for fraud and violation of the state law?

How about this poor child being brought into the world, talk about gender identity issues!

I think all this shoudn't be about the trans rights, but the kid's rights. Spain probably has the more open minded laws regarding homosexual and transexual rights but the thing is starting to turn ridiculous. Stop thinking about adult's rights and start considering children pleeeease :/

Poor kid.

Those kids will never know the difference between having a normal mother and father unless the world rubs it in their face or the parents are stupid enough to think that it is something they need to share with the kids.

Unless his/her mother/father posts his own pregnant picture letting the rest of the world know how he/she looks and his/her name, that is.

The kid will know, the world will rub, the kid will suffer.

Agreed. Ooops! Too late. Unless they remove most literature, television, computer and any other media outlet, the child will recognize a difference. Also they probably shouldn't have made it a public issue then. It was on every damn radio station, even NPR! Seemed to be relishing the spotlight as well, heard interviews from several reporters. This thing probably occurs far more frequently than we are aware but those parents are probably wise enough not to make it public. That kid is not doomed, but it is going to have a difficult childhood with parents that feel this was something they needed to share, kind of like that volcano you made in third grade; A proud science experiment.

Yeah, you guys have a point, they should have just kept their mouths shut. It is terrible what a little bit of momentary fame will do to some peoples thought process.
