Default [Mac OS X] How-To Rip and Encode DVDs

[Mac OS X] How-To Rip and Encode DVDs

Required Software

MacTheRipper

HandBrake

VLC Media Player

Alternatively, you can download a more recent version of MacTheRipper:

Torrent:
http://www.peerden.com/mac-software/...v3-0-r14m.html

Premium Direct Download:
http://www.peerden.com/mac-software-...v3-0-r14m.html

Ripping: MacTheRipper

Insert the DVD and open MacTheRipper. Always use Full Disc Extraction (the default setting). Click 'Go' choose the 'Save Location' and wait for the process to finish.

Encoding: HandBrake

Open HandBrake and select your Source. Make sure the main movie is the selected 'Title'.

Supported sources:
Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (encrypted or unencrypted, but protection methods other than CSS are not supported and must be handled externally with third-party software), and some .VOB and .TS files.

HandBrake has built-in Presets that you can experiment with. Depending on the movie you will need to make adjustments. I have created a Custom Preset that I use frequently.

First choose the 'Normal' Preset. Change the 'Format' to 'AVI file'. Next change the 'Encoder' to 'XviD'. Check to make sure the 'FPS' is 'Same as Source' and the '2-pass encoding' box is ticked.

Depending on the movie's duration you can adjust the 'Quality' settings to your liking. I aim for dvd-quality video so I typically use the 'Target size (MB)' of '1400'. If you have a shorter movie (under 2 hours) you may be satisfied with the bitrate achieved by setting this to '700' MB. Alternatively, you could change the 'Codec' to 'AVC/H.264 Video'. This will allow you to achieve the highest quality video in the smallest filesize. However, H.264 (x264) encoding takes significantly longer and uses more CPU power than XviD.

Click the 'Picture Settings' button. Un-check 'Anamorphic (PAR)' to keep the correct aspect ratio. Click 'Close'.

[The video in this image is NOT interlaced.]

At this point you should save your Custom Preset. If necessary click 'Toggle Presets' then click the button, choose 'Current' under 'Picture Settings' and enter some descriptive information. Click 'Add' to save the Preset. Now the next time you encode a movie all you really need to do is choose your Preset, check for interlaced video and subtitles.

Click 'Picture Settings' again. Use the Next/Previous buttons to see if the video is interlaced. If it is, choose 'Fast' under 'Deinterlace'.

[The video in the above image is interlaced.]

If you want to Hardcode any subtitles, click the 'Audio & Subtitles' button. Click 'Subtitles' and choose the language. There is an option for 'Forced Subs Only'. For example, in an English movie that should hardcode only the non-English parts.

Now click 'Start' and wait for the process to finish. Depending on your CPU this process could take some time to complete.

Screenshots: VLC Media Player

If you plan to upload the movie to PeerDen you should provide as much information as possible per the Uploading Rules. This includes screenshots. Just open your movie in VLC Media Player, click the 'Pause' button and take a snapshot by choosing Video > Snapshot. Or you can press the following keyboard shortcut: Command-Option-S. Take several screenshots at different times in the movie. Then upload the images to a hosting site such as:
ImageShack or TinyPic or aGigForImages or Photobucket. Here is an example from http://www.peerden.com/dvdrip/1001-a...drip-xvid.html.

The HTML image code looks like this:

For more information about HTML codes check the vBulletin FAQ.

The next step is to make a torrent and share with everyone!

Another terrific resource Xander. I have deviated only in that I opted for a consistent average bit rate of 1000, which seems to offer a better quality rip than targeting file size alone.

Thanks again
