Default Improve transmission speed?

Is there anything I can do to improve my transmission speed for the down load and up load of torrents?

Make sure your ports are open and forwarded if necessary. That is all really.

Port forwarding information is included in the [Mac OS X] How-To Create Torrents and Upload to PeerDen tutorial.

MGL-

What kind of speeds are you currently seeing? What speeds has your ISP advertised, if any?

If you run several speed tests at Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test making sure that nothing else is using your bandwidth*, what are the results?
*Accurate speed tests results can only be obtained with no other traffic on the network. Connect only the one computer running the tests and make sure that all applications are closed with the exception of the single browser window necessary to run the test. Ideally, no other browser windows or computer services should be running. Several tests should be run to more than one testing site. Publish all results.
After we have these numbers and see where you currently are, there might be some things we can suggest, but we need these hard numbers to look at.

Ok.. my port is closed. The instructions are for a windows application.

I have found the "Network Utility" on my Mac, it's asking for an "internet or IP address to scan for open ports" Is the peerden url that is posted in the threads what it wants?

The instructions are to configure a router. They work for both Mac and Windows.

Do you have the OS X Firewall turned On? Either turn it Off or open the port you have set in Transmission under Preferences > Advanced. To open the port in OS X go to System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall. Click "New", choose "Other" as the "Port Name" and enter the Port number in both TCP and UDP, type "Transmission" as the Description and click OK. I am on Tiger right now, so it may be a little different in Leopard.

Or just turn the firewall Off!

And if you do have a router, follow the instructions in the tutorial from PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Then check the port status in Transmission and it should be "Open" and green.

Edit: In Leopard the Firewall is System Preferences > Security > Firewall. Either allow all incoming connections or add Transmission to the list of exceptions.
